Jill Sima

Member, Program Committee

Jill is raising her 22-year-old son, Peter, who has Down syndrome, as well as enjoying being the mother to three other adult children and Gigi to 5 grandchildren. A big part of her raising Peter is being his service provider through a third-party agency. Like many parents of young adults with disabilities, her responsibilities include managing Peter’s medical needs, SSI, waiver services, Vocation Rehabilitation services and post-secondary education through IUPUI-SITE and Project Search. She also homeschooled her four children over a period of 15 years.

Jill co-created a special needs ministry at Traders Point Christian Church with Lisa Hurtubise and served as co-ministry team leader for about seven years, providing for the special needs of children in a self-contained classroom or through a buddy in the general Sunday school classes; Parents’ Night Out events where special needs children attended an extravagant evening of fun and faith while their parents had a night out; and, Family Fun Nights where families of children with special needs joined in fun family activities like hayrides, bowling nights, and swimming events.

Jill also created and lead the Ágape disability mission in Nicaragua. She organized and lead mission teams of special education teachers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, nurses, doctors and others with a heart for special needs individuals to serve there twice a year supporting the special needs children, their families and teachers. Each trip provided teacher training and other supports; fun activities with the children; gatherings for the older Agape Vocational students and graduates; parent support meetings and encouragement; food distribution to families in need; participation in church services; and some physical work in the facilities. The program began with 25 part- time students and presently enrolls more than 125 students in two locations.
