“Home Alone”: The Transition from Direct Supports to Alone Time and Greater Independence

  • Creating time alone is a journey and a process and changes gradually

  • Create opportunities for independence while still living at home (more time alone, more independence in the community, more decision-making, etc.)

  • Creating a support network (neighbors, friends, and others familiar with the goals)

GUEST SPEAKER: COLLEEN RENIE

Colleen Renie has been the Executive Director of The Village of Merici, Inc. since 2016. She was one of the original developers of the Village of Merici organization, having previously served as chairman of the board for 9 years. She has spent more than 40 years in the field of developmental disabilities as an occupational therapist.

Colleen has spent her career in service delivery as well as operations and program management in her previous position as Coordinator of Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Assistive Technology at MSD of Lawrence Township for the past 24 years. Colleen obtained her Assistive Technology Professional credentials from Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) in 2001. She has a strong history of advocating for individuals with disabilities.

Colleen provides guidance as Village of Merici grows and fulfills its mission of providing residential and community options for adults with developmental disabilities in the Indianapolis area. Prior to her work at Lawrence Township, she worked with PAI, Inc (formerly known as Psychological Assessment of Indiana, Inc.) as a developmental therapist assessing adults and children with disabilities. Prior to PAI, Inc., she was Department Chair for Occupational Therapy services at Easterseals Crossroads Rehabilitation Center.

Colleen is a life-long resident of Indianapolis and lives with her husband Joe. They have 4 adult children (her oldest son has an intellectual disability) and 1 grandchild who she loves to spend time with when not working.
